After Halloween: how to protect your children's teeth from sugar

Why is Halloween candy a problem?

Sugar feeds the bacteria naturally present in the mouth. When these bacteria digest sugar, they produce acids that attack tooth enamel.
The longer sugar remains in contact with teeth, the greater the risk of cavities.

Some types of treats are even more damaging:

  • Sticky sweets (caramels, jujubes)
  • Icing sugars and hard candies
  • Tart treats that weaken enamel

1. Limit frequency... not necessarily quantity

Eating several sweets at once is less damaging than munching sugar all day long.
Each sweet intake reactivates the acid attack in the mouth for about 20 minutes.

Tip: allow one portion of sweets after a meal, rather than small portions scattered throughout the day.

2. Drink water after treats

Water helps to rinse away sugar residue and neutralize acidity.
In Montreal, tap water often contains a beneficial amount of fluoride.

3. Brush well... but not immediately after eating sour sweets

If the child eats sour candy, the enamel is temporarily weakened.
It's best :

  • Rinse mouth with water
  • Wait 30 minutes
  • Then brush with fluoride toothpaste

4. Choose the "least worst" sweets

Some are less damaging than others:

Best choices

  • Chocolate (melts quickly and doesn't stay on teeth as long)
  • Non-sticky candies
  • Unsweetened snacks if possible (pretzels, popcorn...)

To be limited

  • Sticky jelly beans
  • Caramels
  • Hard candies that stay in your mouth for a long time

5. Implement a "candy management plan

To avoid overconsumption :

  • Set a number of sweets per day
  • Keep the bag out of the reach of children
  • Consider donating a portion of the proceeds to a fundraiser, school or candy barter program.

This approach helps reduce the frequency of exposure to sugar.

6. A check-up after Halloween? A great idea!

Autumn is the perfect time to :

  • Check for small cavities
  • Deep teeth cleaning
  • Apply fluoride if necessary
